The port of Liverpool has installed a new £1 million (US$1.6m) IT system that has reduced port turnaround time to less than an hour for 95% of drivers.

The new IT system includes a new wi-fi network, an upgraded terminal operating system (TOS) and a new global positioning system (GPS) for its straddle-carriers.

The upgrade means the port can improve yard strategy, equipment deployment and handle additional messaging between the TOS and the straddle-carriers.

The new GPS also includes RFID and other technology to prevent containers being incorrectly handled.

The first phase of implementation saw the new system applied to the port’s road interchange. Vessel operations will be phased-in over the coming weeks.

“These advanced software modules will assist in providing more available space on the terminal through dynamic allocation of container slots and automated workload allocation to the straddle-carriers, the benefits of which equate to a 22% increase in available stacking area and productivity enhancements of up to 20%,” the port said.
