TNT is to extend its logistics footprint in China by investing €170 million (US$216m) in its road distribution network.

TNT Hoau, the company’s road distribution arm in China, saw sales in first half of this year exceed revenue for all of 2009 as it expanded its coverage to 26 major cities.

TNT Hoau introduced its day-definite road service in February last year to complement its national less-than-truckload (LTL) operations.

At present TNT uses 800 depots in China for day-definite road distribution services but hundreds of the 1,500 operated by TNT Hoau will be upgraded for day-definite services.

Eight "mega" road hubs will be added to the two in Xian and Wuhan, and further investments will be made in barcoding and GPS technology to improve traceability and security.

A spokesman told IFW more older trucks would be replaced in addition to the 400 EU III-compliant trucks already purchased for deployment in China.

“[We will] hire new people – TNT Hoau has 18,000 staff – and train them,” he added.
