A US lorry driver has been convicted on drug conspiracy charges for his role in hauling 400kg of marijuana in a shipment of papaya fruit and faces up to 40 years in prison.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Gilberto Avalos-Rivera drove the hidden marijuana to a residence in Griffin, Georgia, which the Mexican drug cartel La Familia was using as an off-loading base.
Police officers stopped two pick-up trucks leaving the property and discovered the drugs, along with paperwork linking Avalos-Rivera.
Avalos-Rivera told officers he was paid US$2,000 by La Familia.
