The North Sea Freight Intelligent Transport Solutions (NS FRITS) initiative has been created to tackle the growing problem of road freight crime in the UK and Europe.
NS FRITS aims to improve efficiency, safety and security by developing an intelligent system that will provide live in-cab communication to HGV drivers about conditions in a region or country they are about to enter. Testing will be completed by 2011.
The system aims to reduce the risk of attack by providing information about secure parking locations, crime hotspots and local policing practices.
In Europe, €8.2 billion (US$10.6bn) worth of cargo and/or vehicles are stolen each year, with an additional €450 million undeclared by transport operators, according to TruckPol, part of the national ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service.
In England alone, over £500 million (US$764m) worth of trucks and goods are stolen via an estimated 40,000 truck crimes each year, with more than 3,000 HGVs never recovered.
NS FRITS, a public/private sector partnership, incorporates 10 partner organisations from across the North Sea region from the communications, technology, law enforcement, logistics, manufacturing and crime prevention sectors.
They are: People United Against Crime; Avanti Communications; KLPD, the Netherland’s National Police Agency; Volvo Technology Corp; Bremen Senator for Education and Science; the University of Hull’s Logistics Institute; Humberside Police; ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service; the University of Huddersfield’s Applied Criminology Centre; and Avonwood Developments.
