US rail freight traffic still on the up

North American intermodal volumes continue to hit new highs

Intermodal rail freight traffic in the US continues to set records,hitting its highest levels this year of both carloads and intermodal volumes, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

During the week ending 28 August, North American intermodal traffic totalled 237,194 trailers and containers, up 17.1% on the same week last year, but still down 1.2% on 2008.

Compared with 2009, container volumes increased 18.1% and trailer volumes rose 11.4%. Compared with the same week in 2008, container volumes were up 7% but trailer volumes dropped 31.7%.

The US network carried 302,358 carloads, up 5.8% on the same week in 2009, but down 11.3% on 2008.

In Canada that week, rail freight volumes totalled 53,747 trailers or containers, up 24.4% on 2009.

Mexican railroads carried 8,168 trailers or containers, up 26.7% on the same week last year.

During the first 34 weeks of 2010, US railways carried 9.6 million carloads (up 7.1% on 2009, but down 12.9% on 2008) with 7.2 million trailers or containers (up 14.3% on 2009, down 5.3% on 2008).

The Canadian network has carried 2.3 million carloads, up 21.1% on last year, and 2.4 million carloads, up 20.6% so far this year.
