The first train to use the new rail link between the port of Auckland and the Wiri Inland terminal will be unloaded tomorrow (3 February).
Port MD Jens Madsen said completion of the rail exchange would bring the container port closer to exporters in South Auckland. many of which are located near Wiri, which is operated by a subsidiary of the port.
“If its economy is to grow, New Zealand needs top quality infrastructure and a flexible mix of sea, road and rail transport options,” he said.
“This is about bringing the seaport right to the doorstep of businesses in South Auckland. Exporters and importers will be able to drop off and pick up containers without having to negotiate motorways.”
Four services of 23 wagons will be operated a week in each direction.
