This week a freight train carrying new Peugeot cars for forwarder Gefco caught fire at the entrance of the Fourbanne rail tunnel, in eastern France, on the Lyon-Strasbourg line.
The 740-metre train, operated by Fret SNCF, had left the French auto maker’s plant in Sochaux, carrying 260 new Peugeot 3008, 5008 and 308 vehicles.
Fire is reported to have broken out at two different points of the train, engulfing five wagons and 30 vehicles. No injuries were reported.
Around 600 metres of overhead electricity cables melted and waste ground near the tunnel was ablaze before the a team of 50 firefighters got the fire under control.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way and Fret SNCF told IFW the preliminary findings pointed to braking problems.
