Maritime companies and organisations have shown their support for charity group Seafarers UK by taking part in the 24 Peaks Challenge.

Twenty-two teams battled against heavy rain over the gruelling course this month, which involved climbing 24 peaks (all over 2,400ft) in England’s Lake District in 24 hours.

Seven teams from Associated British Ports (ABP) entered, as well as teams from Carisbrooke, OSG Ship Management, Lloyds Register, Teekay Shipping and Wightlink.

All money raised will go to help seafarers and their families who have fallen on hard times.

Last year’s 24 Peaks Challenge raised £115,000 with ABP teams raising £38,000. So far this year, ABP has raised £35,000 and hopes to exceed this as the fundraising process is still going on.

Barry Bryant, Director General of Seafarers UK, said: “We are very grateful to the maritime and associated organisations that took up the challenge of climbing 24 peaks to raise money for the seafaring community.

“This support will help us throw a lifeline to the many seafarers that desperately need our help in these hard times.”

ABP CEO Peter Jones, who took part in the event for the second time, said: “It’s fantastic that so many colleagues want to show their support for Seafarers UK by taking part in this gruelling challenge.”
