TNT and Con-way Freight have signed a deal to link their road freight networks in Europe and the US.

Con-way has now become TNT’s preferred transport provider in North America and has taken over from TNT’s previous deal with Yellow Freight, which concluded at the end of last year.

The agreement will primarily involve TNT’s Economy Express service that operates a three- to six-day delivery schedule between Europe and the US.

TNT would not say what increase in volumes would be generated for its network, but said in the first phase shipments would only go one way, into the US.

A TNT spokesman said there was high customer demand for sending shipments into the US from Europe, but the operator did not want the risk of setting up its own network there.

Con-way is expected to begin feeding volumes into TNT’s European road network from the second half of the year, offering its clients a European distribution service.
