Eurotunnel has reopened 17km of the north Channel Tunnel, allowing it to increase the number of trains it runs to nearly 170 per day, including 90 truck shuttles.

It said technical staff were working round the clock to bring a second 17km section back into service as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Operation Stack has been criticised for its inability to handle the number of lorries attempting to board ferries at Dover.

Kent County Council said the system will be needed on a regular basis while the Tunnel remained at reduced capacity, and plans a 2,500 unit lorry park.

It said: "We have identified a site for the lorry park and we are doing all the ground work to prepare a planning application." The Freight Transport Association's Geoff Dossetter said Stack was ineffective. "This is a serious issue. The police are obliged to operate Operation Stack when there is a problem, most usually on account of the ferries being buggered, " he said.

"It's just daft that you have to park lorries on the motorway. It puts it out of action."
