Lufthansa Cargo (LC) has teamed up with security technology provider Smiths Detection and US security specialist Covenant Aviation Security to provide “an all-in-one, TSA-approved security solution for the freight forwarding, air cargo shipping and logistics industry in the US”.
The partners said they will “provide both large and small freight forwarders and shippers with an array of air cargo solutions”, including ground handling, security screening and equipment, warehousing, training and transportation.
How the three partners contributed would depend on the needs of actual customers, according to James LoBello, LC’s head of security for the Americas.
He told IFW that typically Lufthansa Cargo would look after security and operational supervision, training, processes; Covenant Aviation would provide expert manpower, licensing and security concepts; and Smiths Detection would provide equipment and training support.
He added that the service was principally focused on freight forwarders and removing some of the increasing security burden from them, although it could also work on more simple levels.
“This concept will allow the forwarder to engage in their daily sales strategies while the teaming concept can provide the operational solutions on the line level. Supply Chain Solutions could be a complete outsourcing concept or isolated to just warehouse operations or security screening operations alone.
He added that although jointly operated facilities had yet to be decided on, they could be created in the future.
“Currently, there are point persons assigned by each company to contribute to the teaming partnership. Jointly operated facilities may be one of the areas that we will look into, although, not the primary and initial focus at this time.
“However, the partners have further strengthened the concept initially by jointly providing resources to some existing Lufthansa Cargo facilities.”
Tom Long, executive VP of Covenant Aviation Security, added: “Now shippers and forwarders have access to the end-to-end security solutions needed to meet the TSA’s mandate in a cost-effective and streamlined way.”
