Carbon management has become a key part of the corporate supply chain strategy for major global companies, according to the annual CDP Supply Chain Report by management consultant AT Kearney and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
The 44 CDP supply chain member companies are utilising carbon-management programmes within their own businesses and expecting their suppliers to do the same.
The report says 6% of CDP supply chain member companies already deselect suppliers that fail to manage their carbon output. Meanwhile, 56% expected to deselect suppliers in the future for failing to meet carbon-management criteria.
Some also indicated that they intend to develop contracts that require improved carbon management.
“Suppliers are now expected by some of their global customers to demonstrate greenhouse gas emission management, awareness and action, in order to maintain business relationships,” says the report.
The report includes climate change information from 710 suppliers contacted by CDP supply chain members.
Paul Dickinson, CEO of CDP, said: “It is clear that some companies are now requiring their suppliers to address carbon management as a core business issue.”
