Security teams at Heathrow airport have been handed an award for their part in stopping £24m (US$39m) of heroin from entering the country.

The UK Border Agency’s Heathrow freight targeting and anti-smuggling teams received the award the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).

Between April 08 to March 09, the teams intercepted around £24m worth of class A drugs.

More recently they were behind the discovery of around 165kg of heroin in freight at Heathrow, believed to be the biggest seizure of its kind ever at the airport.

The detection led to an international investigation, a number of arrests and further large seizures in the United Kingdom and South Africa. In total, £25m worth of heroin and cannabis were seized.
