Eurotunnel saw first-quarter truck traffic increase by 35% and rail freight traffic up by 8% this year, although capacity was reduced in the first quarter of 2009.

Eurotunnel transported 231,200 trucks on its shuttle services and 300,000 tonnes of goods through the tunnel during the first three months of the year.

However, the operator said like-for-like comparisons with 2009 were hard to make, because tunnel capacity had been reduced during January and February last year while work was being carried out to restore infrastructure following the September 2008 fire.

Traffic was affected this year by heavy snow and strikes in Europe.

Revenue from Eurotunnel’s core activity, transporting trucks and passenger vehicles aboard the shuttles, increased to €71 million (US$95m) which, at a constant exchange rate, equates to an increase of 16% on the same period last year.

Jacques Gounon, chairman and CEO, said: “Despite the economic crisis, Eurotunnel continues to win back its market shares.

“The exceptional situation resulting from the suspension of air traffic has clearly demonstrated the flexibility and efficiency of the Channel Tunnel. This unique positioning is the basis from which Eurotunnel will continue to develop its future.”
