Port throughput at the main US west coast gateways has showed signs of improvement after both Long Beach and Los Angeles recorded volume growth from June to August.
Both ports saw a slight peak season, with throughput at LA increasing by 11% from June to August, and Long Beach rising by 19% over the same period.
However, throughput for the period was still down year-on-year. In August Long Beach handled 493,000teu, compared with 572,000teu in August 2008, a 13% drop.
LA handled 612,500teu in August, compared with 757,000teu in August 2008, representing a 19% decline.
At the beginning of 2009 however, cargo volumes were down 30% year-on-year at both ports.
