Ikea has begun constructing its southern Europe logistics hub, located near Marseille's Fos container terminal.

The home furnishings retailer said the first phase of the development was scheduled to enter service in July 2009.

Its 135,000sq metre of storage capacity would accommodate annual traffic volumes of 15,000-20,000teu and create 250 jobs.

Depending on the growth of Ikea's sales and rate of store openings in the southern Europe zone, the hub could undergo second phase development.

This would lift storage capacity to 266,000sq metres and annual throughput to 40,000teu.

The project would represent total investment of E150m (US$190m) when completed in 2012-2013, with 80% of the goods handled at the hub arriving by ship at the port of Marseille.
