The fascinating story of overland transport pioneers

Printer friendly version Email the editor Send to a friend
The Long Haul Pioneers, written by trucking enthusiast Ashley Coghill, is the story of forwarder and haulier Astran Cargo Services, a specialist in overland transport between Europe and the Middle East for more than 45 years.

It all started in 1964, when two friends, Michael Woodman and Bob Paul, embarked on a journey that “few hardened truckers would have considered”, and created the first long-haul overland route across Europe and into the Middle East – the “Middle East Run”.

The book details the life of the company, from its beginnings as Asian Transport to today’s Astran Cargo Services.

“The early long-haul drivers would think nothing of a 16,000km round-trip to Iran or the Gulf, or being stranded at 2,000 metres up a mountain pass with temperatures below -40C,” said Old Pond Publishing.

Have a chance to win this fascinating tale about Astran by answering this question:

What is the name of the first long-distance overland route between Europe and the Middle East?
