Re: the possible return of parcels/freight to the railways
Dear Kizzi
I was intrigued with Tony Berkeley’s comments on the possible return of parcels/freight to the railways – does no one remember Red Star Parcels, Track 61, etc, etc?
In Ireland we have seen, without a word of debate, the demise of Fast Track because of the introduction of new train sets (that’s progress?).
A number of years ago, late one snowy night, on a visit to Zurich I heard a tram approaching with a strange clanking sound, which at first I thought was the Ghost of Christmas Past.
To my astonishment, it was a tram pulling two very old wooden goods wagons.
I enquired as to what was going on and was told it was a means of getting rubbish, at day’s end, from the central station to a waste treatment facility at the end of the line.
I looked for a photograph, but instead came up with this one, which is even more intriguing, given Lord Berkeley’s thoughts.
