US intermodal traffic still on the up

But railcar loads not hitting 2008 levels

Intermodal rail freight traffic in the US continues to grow,hitting its highest level this year so far, but carload numbers are not hitting 2008 levels, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) has reported.

During the week ending 14 August, intermodal traffic totalled 233,767 trailers and containers, up 20.8% on the same week last year, but still down 1.4% on 2008.

Compared with 2009, container volumes increased 22.4%, trailer volumes rose 12.3%.

The network carried 295,948 carloads, up 7.1% on the same week in 2009, but down 11.3% on the 2008 figure.

During the first 32 weeks of 2010, US railways carried nine million carloads. This was up 7.2% on 2009, but down 13.1% on 2008, with 6.7 million trailers or containers, up 13.9% on 2009.

In Canada that week, rail freight volumes totalled 50,694 trailers or containers, up 18.5% on 2009, and for the year so far, 2.3 million carloads, up 21.1% on last year, and 1.4 million trailers or containers, up 15.2%.

Mexican railroads carried 6,925 trailers or containers, up 19.1% on the same week last year, and year to date, 438,907 carloads, up 16.5% on last year, and 206,806 trailers or containers, up 31.7%.
