Transaid has completed the first phase of its Professional Driver Training Project in partnership with the Industrial Training Centre Trust (ITCT). Transaid’s Zambia Programme Manager, Caroline Barber, returned to the UK having guided colleagues through major developments over the last two years towards a self-sustaining business model.

Caroline came home to scoop the Rising Star of the Year award at the MAN everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards - testament to her hard work and dedication.

Since the start of 2009, the ITCT has trained more than 700 HGV drivers and supported five driver trainers through a robust training programme, supported by professional UK volunteers. Improved driving techniques, teaching skills, greater risk awareness and health and safety measures have increased the quality of training and knowledge being passed to students.

Thanks to Transaid’s input, the centre is now operating at full capacity, with a 52% mark-up on income generated from the previous year.

Transaid will continue to provide input into the project for the next two years as it embarks on the second phase.

Following this success, Transaid is looking to implement a second Professional Driver Training Project, in Tanzania. To support this initiative, please contact Chantelle Cummings on 020 7387 8136 or email chantelle@transaid.org

The Transaid Professional Driver Training Project aims to increase economic capacity and reduce the number of road deaths in Zambia which are the third biggest premature killer in sub-saharan Africa. The project would not be possible without support from a UK consortium of companies, including Bibby Distribution, Norbert Dentressangle Logistics UK, Michelin, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Britcom International, Ceva Logistics, Hoyer UK, Man Truck & Bus, Toyota Material Handling UK and Wincanton.

Transaid Week – it’s coming: 5-9 July.         Sign up for a Transaid Africa Challenge today.
