London Thamesport moved 25% of the import containers it handled in July by rail, setting a new record in multimodal share.

Rail movements during July were the highest handled at the London port since 2008.

David Gledhill CEO Hutchison Ports (UK), which owns London Thamesport, said: “We take the effect our operations have on the environment very seriously, and are constantly striving to reduce the impact we cause.

“We are dedicated to transporting as many containers as possible by rail, thus easing pressure on the country’s road network and reducing both our carbon footprint and that of our customers.

“This record has been achieved through better utilisation of trains and the addition of a fourth service to Bristol.”

The company expects rail volumes to remain at high levels for the coming months.
