The EU has made a breakthough in negotiations with Canada towards a full “open skies” aviation agreement.
The European Commission said the agreement more than matched the scope of the first-stage EU-US aviation agreement, which came into play in April, and would remove all restrictions on routes, prices, or the number of weekly flights between Canada and the EU.
Other traffic rights would be liberalised gradually in parallel with the opening up of investment opportunities.
The EC said the agreement would eventually establish a full Open Aviation Area between the EU and Canada, in which EU nationals would be able to establish operations in Canada and freely invest in Canadian airlines and vice versa.
It also included agreement to align cargo security.
Antonio Tajani, commission VP responsible for transport, said: “It is groundbreaking in the aviation world as the agreement includes all possible aspects of aviation, including investment.”
