'Emissions toolkit' for warehouse operators
Survey results will help managers operate a cleaner management system
The warehousing industry is set to benefit from an “emissions toolkit” that will help warehouse operators cut their carbon emissions and save costs.
The UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) is working on the project with the Carbon Trust, an independent company backed by the government, to help businesses measure, manage and reduce their carbon footprints.
It is estimated that the warehousing industry represents around 3% of the UK’s CO2 emissions.
Keith Horgan, Carbon Trust partnership development manager, said: “We are not talking about hi-tech solutions, but pragmatic and cost-effective actions. The UK warehousing industry could save in excess of £150m in energy costs and 1.5m tonnes of carbon by making simple changes.”
The Carbon Trust is undertaking a series of site surveys and workshops with UKWA members in order to identify potential barriers for introducing energy saving systems, while considering the payback period on the warehouse operator’s investment in such schemes.
The results of the surveys are expected by April and will be used to produce a bespoke “emissions toolkit” for all UKWA members.
