Volga-Dnepr Airlines is to take delivery of a third new-generation IL-76 freighter next month, taking the group’s investment in the modernised aircraft to more than US$90 million.

Volga said its investment in the 50-tonne capacity ramp-loading freighter was likely to double in the near future to meet global demand for the IL-76TD-90VD’s unique operating capability.

It has already signed a contract for another two aircraft that are scheduled for delivery next year.

Unlike old versions of the IL-76, banned from commercial flights in Europe, North America and other developed aviation markets since 2000, after failing to meet strict noise and emissions requirements, the IL-76TD-90VD was approved for global operations in 2006 and frequently operates to major markets in Europe, the US, Japan and Australia.

Volga said the aircraft had proved to be both a commercial and environmental success -- a 7-9% more efficient fuel burn increased its operating range to 10,200km.

Dennis Gliznoutsa, group commercial director (charters) for Volga-Dnepr, said: “For example, the IL-76TD-90VD can operate a direct flight from Europe to Kabul.”
