The UK liner agent blacklisted by the European Union (EU) for being an entity of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) stopped operating more than two years ago, according to one of its former bosses.
IFW’s sister publication, Lloyd’s List, today reported that Derek Johnson, CEO of Johnson Stevens Agencies, a 50% shareholder in IRISL UK, claimed the company stopped trading on 1 April 2008.
He said the decision “had nothing to do with anybody. It was just a UK agency situation. Johnson Stevens was the agent, and this was a company that was superfluous”.
He added that Johnson Stevens was UK agent for Hafize Darya Shipping, which also featured on the blacklist as the container operation of IRISL, and would continue to act in that capacity for as long as it was permitted to do so by the authorities.
On Monday, the European Union (EU) blacklisted IRISL along with 24 associated companies in response to “concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme”.
