Austrian group Gebrüder Weiss has strengthened its position in the central and eastern European market by taking a controlling stake in Serbian forwarding and logistics operator Eurocargo.

Eurocargo has around 100 staff and operates logistics facilities in Dobanovci and Leskovac as well as customs station on the borders of Hungary and Croatia.

It has an annual turnover of around €7.5m (US$11m).

Regional director Erich Schafer described Serbia as a "pivot" in the Balkans region, and said the acquisition was "a further important expansion step for Gebrüder Weiss in south-east Europe".

Gebrüder Weiss’s 30 staff in Serbia will move into Eurocargo’s Dobanovci terminal when the deal is completed on 1 January.
