While at many European airports, cargo volumes have been declining since the summer, traffic at Brussels Airport remained almost stable, with uplift of more than 475,000 tonnes.

Since August 2011, cargo volumes increased on a monthly basis, with a growth of up to 7.3% in December, despite the overall economical downturn, said the airport.

Major cargo airlines including Korean Air Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Saudi Airlines Cargo and EVA Airways Cargo invested in additional flights and capacity, especially in the second half of the year. DHL integrator traffic also recorded a strong growth in 2011.

The number of full freighter frequencies increased in December with almost 10% to 1,106 movements, bringing the year result to 11,740 movements, an increase of more than 8%.

Meanwhile, Singapore Changi Airport registered a strong performance in December to achieve new records for aircraft movements in 2011.

Steady demand for air freight enabled Changi, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, to close the year on a positive note.

Some 167,000 tonnes of cargo were handled in December, an increase of 6.9% on-year, representing Changi’s busiest month in three years.

This year sees the launch of freighter flights to Chengdu and Chongqing in China, the introduction of all-freighter flights by Emirates and Lufthansa Cargo and Cargolux and Cathay Pacific Cargo commencing operations of the new B747-8F aircraft to Singapore.
